Yarn Strong Sista

Yarn Strong Sista (YSS) is a National Indigenous Education Consultancy based in Melbourne’s Western suburbs. The Indigenous-run business specialises in providing authentic Aboriginal Training and Educational resources particularly focusing on Aboriginal Pedagogy. YSS aims to educate and empower both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in understanding Australia’s history and ways to weave Aboriginal Pedagogies within Early Childhood Education.

Our Aboriginal Education Consultants have a diverse range of qualifications and experiences including, Early Childhood Education, Aboriginal Cultural Knowledges, and training in the Arts

Over the years, Yarn Strong Sista have built a solid reputation as one of the few Indigenous businesses working in the Early Childhood industry and have therefore created quite a large platform for ourselves. We utilise this platform to build the economics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses by purchasing, promoting and selling ethical and authentic resources. Yaringa Designs, The Koorie Circle and Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation are some of the First Nations-run businesses whose products we stock on our website. We also promote and sell books written and illustrated by Indigenous writers and artists. Our focus this year is to develop resources in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and art groups, with the intention of promoting them to the international tourist industry – creating reliable and authentic products in hopes to eliminate the appropriation of our art and culture in this industry.

At Yarn Strong Sista we are inspired by Indigenous values and embed these into every element of the business. A core value of ours is to look after people and to look after the land. Our felt toy collections are made by Indigenous Nepalese women. The Indigenous people of Nepal have been felting for over 1000 years and this is one of their traditional handicrafts. Sourcing our materials through Fairtrade organisations means that we are doing our part in looking after the people who work hard to produce resources for us that meet our standards of quality. It is an ethical choice that we make to ensure the safety of these workers. It is extremely important to us that we use Fairtrade products and operate in sustainable and ethical ways as it reduces harm and adheres to an Indigenous way of living. I visited Nepal for the first time in 2013, and have created strong, meaningful relationships with the women who work hard to hand-craft our resources.
